the lobbs are 2 to 3 times more expensive than C&Js. is the a quality increase that is commensurate with the price increase? please explain. i am relatively new to the high end shoe market and i want to have my facts straight before i commit thousands of dollars in revamping my shoe wardrobe. i really like the fit of C&J 341 last but if the JL are 2 or 3 times better across the board then i will just save my pennies and go that route more slowly. please advise.

No. Above the price and quality of a pair of Allen Edmonds, all increases in quality are incremental.

I'm not sure which lines you are referring to. C&J have their Benchgrade and Handgrade ranges. JLP has Classic and Prestige. If you are comparing C&J Handgrade to JLP Classic, I don't think there is much difference and I would go for the C&J.

IMHO, I believe EG's are better quality than JLP Classic. However, if I had the choice I would go for Gaziano and Girling above either of them - their craftsmanship and attention to detail is outstanding.

This is my experience from owning JLP Classic and Prestige, EG, C&J, G&G, Tricker's and Cheaney.

The leather quality on a JL Classis is superior to that of the C&J Handgrade IMO.

thanx for all of the info. so what's the practical difference between C&J handgrade and the lower line? can the handgrades be made on the 341 last or not?. what is the difference between JL classic and prestige and does JL have a last similar to the C&J 341?

^ The handgrades can be made on the 341 (or any other last) through C&Js MTO program, but the prices are closer to JL Classics. If the 341 fits you best, MTO may be the way to go.

price and quality for high end shoes are not proportionally linear. you are not getting a 2 or 3 times better shoes for 2 or 3 times the price.

Actually I've always wondered what the difference between $500 shoes and $1000+ shoes myself. As long as we're not talking about funky "designer" shoes, what kind of practical differences are there anyway?

The differences ae not about practicability. I'd say on this level it is all about personaly style preferences and fit. I don't believe in one of these shoes being "better" than the other one.

The nearest last to 341 should be the 8000 last.

As for the difference Classic/prestige at Lobb, the leather is better (approaching the quality of the bespoke leather) and much attention is paid to the finishing.

I don't wear either brand, but they are both high-quality shoes.

Decide which one fits better and is more comfortable. Buy that one.
