I have something of a bias against penny loafers that are more heavily moccasin styled (very big clunky moc seams) or have split toes. I prefer a sleeker, more shaped look.

Go all out. Seriously, it is not a good place to save money. Weston does do a good job, and so does Mantellassi from what I have seen. Wilkes Bashford stocks (stocked) a lot of croc loafers because the owner of the shoe concession loves them. I don't know what they have like that right now.
