critique my bespoke suit

Hey all, decided to get a suit made up while doing a job abroad in India, partly because I need one for a couple of events, and also partly because I'd like to eventually build up a wardrobe made up of bespoke pieces and, having no experience in that, I thought I'd go through the process one time with cheaper fabric, as a kind of test to see what mistakes I make, so as not to repeat them when I decide to splash out on some nicer material. After having seen some of the absolutely horrendous work done by Indian tailors I found the best one in my area (Syed Bawkher in Chennai) and took the plunge.

As this was kind of a spur of the moment decision I was only able to get 2 fittings in, which is obviously not ideal, but circumstances being what they were, I couldn't get more in (had a hectic work schedule and couldn't travel to the tailor as often as I would have liked.)

Couple of things I noticed already:

1. God damn do I stand crooked. It's not the suit, apparently (and this is news to me, having only seen myself from the back after taking these shots) I stand like a hunchback. Which leads me to...

2. Odd shoulders, there is some material bunching up behind the shoulders, as well as below the collar on the back. I suspect that my odd posture didn't help things, given I only had 2 fittings.

3. Sleeves. Frankly, they seem a mess to my novice eyes, the way they are set in the armholes is producing some gnarly creasing.

4. Vents, weird cause in some of the shoots they look they are opening up, but sometimes not.

Anything else? I'm in the position now where I can travel back to the tailor to get alterations made. I'd rather not as I'm leaving the country in a few days and it would be a bit of a mission, I'm considering getting the appropriate work done when I get back home instead... Thoughts? And yes I know the shoes need a shine, and the colour of the material is off because the camera wasn't white balanced properly.

First let me say, that IRL, when seeing you on the street, I'd probably say that your suit fits very well.

But, this being SF:

1. I don't think your crooking is that bad. There's worse. Anyway, that's what bespoke should be for - that you don't see that when you wear a suit. Yes, I know, only two fittings.
On this matter, I think you have to ask yourself whether you want to correct your pose (probs very difficult) or the suit.
2. Yes to fabric bunching at shoulders and neck, but again, it's not that bad. Not at all as bad as I thought it would be when I read "tailor in India".
3. Hum... I think part of the creasing is just for freedom of movement, but your left arm (3rd photo) really doesn't look good.
4. I think the vents kick out in every photo (where they can be seen).

Congrats on a nice suit and thanks for posting pics! Great to see more work from unknown tailors.

Pants look really, really nice from what i can see.. they drape nice and clean in the front. Sleeve pitch is slightly off causing the wrinkles on the sleeves and upper back is a bit tight (I faced the same problem with this too). Shoulder padding seems a bit too much for my tastes as well.

Looks like great work overall especially with just 2 fittings..mind sharing how much you paid?

Something is wrong with the vents; they're kicking out, which is usually because of a back balance issue.

Hey guys thanks for the feedback.

I'm generally very happy with it, especially given how quickly they turned it around.

I've resigned myself to the odd left sleeve, as I'm not in the mood to have the whole thing taken apart at this point.

The vents are a pain **********, this was something that I took note of in the first fitting, and he made some adjustments but somehow it's not right. If possible I'd like to have the vents and bunching on the back modified, do you think that that kind of thing would be possible?

Gshen: the tailor is Syed Bawkher in Chennai. I am based in Bangalore for work, so initially I thought I would find someone here, but a quick survey of the local tailors revealed some of the ugliest mens clothing I've seen in my life. After a bit of digging I found out about SB. They are very professional, family run for 4 generations. The tailoring on my suit cost 7500 rupees, which is around $150. I think with a proper set of fitting one could achieve a great look.

It looks pretty good. You have already pointed out the very small details that could be fixed. Im actually glad I saw this, as I was losing faith in these bespoke threads. Everyone else that creates a thread like this seems to flush their money down the toilet on bespoke. Congrats

That looks quite good for something from an unknown tailor where fittings were restricted. A few minor tweaks on the back of the jacket I would suggest but that is minor at this time.

Do you have photographs of the trousers without the coat (front and rear) to see their fit? The inside of the jacket can also evidence quality - do you have them as well?
