Crisis of Conscience and New Year's Resolution

My resolution is to not shop at all for clothing and non-essential items in 2009, put some of that money in savings, and spend the rest on charity. I am one of those persons who has a good income and a fairly secure job, and I feel like it's time for me to give even more back. I am sharing this decision because there may be some of you who think as I do that I really don't need any more material items and that a better way to demonstrate my prosperity is to share it with others who are less fortunate. I look around at the plights of people - joblessness, homelessness, hopelessness, despair - and I almost feel guilty for all that I have. By the way, this also includes shopping for my wife and daughter (but not my granddaughter

). Rather than shop for them, I will take that amount of money and add it to what I normally put in the offering basket at my church. I've already given the "bad news" to my usual sales associates. I hope that others here feel and will do the same.

You sir are destroying the economy. But kudos to you.

I have tried and failed the past few years to donate 10% of my time to charity.
