So on Saturday, I called this store in Soho New York named INA. They have multiple stores but this one carries only mens clothing. I was looking for a cashmere Loro Piana storm system coat. They told me they have one in Large which is exactly what I was looking for!

I asked more details, and the price was right. On Sunday, I drove over to the store to purchase that and other items. At the store there was someone else working, not who I talked to. I asked for the coat, and got a puzzled look. I was told "we don't have one here". When I said I called YESTERDAY, I was told you did. She looked in the computer and saw it listed, but could not find it in the store!

I was told that it was either sold or returned to the consignor. They had no record of either happening though! I asked why when I called YESTERDAY if you had it. Apparently they did not bother to actually look for the piece in the store, but just give me a quote through a computer description!!

Needless to say, it was a VERY wasteful trip, and will be my last there.

Anyone else have bad experiences with consignment stores?

INA has become increasingly disappointing. I can understand your frustration, but for a consingment store to have a computer inventory that's pretty fortuitous. Most of the time, you just have to walk into the different stores and find gems or get disappointed.

I don't think this issue is exclusive to consignment stores. I've had it happen with retail stores as well. Nothing you can do really, except to take your business elsewhere.

I've seen Chelsea boots there selling for more than brand new Retail....I probably won't stop in at INA Men again.

The OP has unrealistic expectations about second-hand stores. As for INA men it is sometimes ok but mostly a waste of time. Tokyo 7/tokyo joe aren't too bad...

    They have pretty things sometimes.

Never felt compelled to buy, though.

Next time (if there is a next time), confirm they have it on the rack. Also get the name of the person you spoke to. If you plan to get down there that day, see if there is any way you can reserve or hold it.

+1 It really is an indication of the importance and commitment to customer service. Now we are surprised when someone treats us well or there is not a screwup.

Good advice. Be as thorough as possible ... and you'll have fewer headaches.

They actually don't put stuff on hold. And the other store was checked. Never again.

How do you sell preowned stuff to be priced higher than new retail??

Actually I see it all the time with these newbie sellers on here.
