Cotton V-Neck Sweater? Does it SHRINK?

hi, i'm sort of new to fashion.

i am thinking about purchasing thin-fabric 100% v-neck sweaters from Gap Outlet and Lands' End.

Size SMALL fits perfectly on me- in a slim fitted way. It's just the right length, any smaller would be too tight.

Size MEDIUM is a bit looser on me.

Do you guys purchase cotton sweaters one size up to account for shrinkage in the wash? Or do you buy the size that fits you just right in the store?

If I follow the washing directions on the tag (wash cold, tumble dry), it shouldn't shrink right?

any tips would be appreciated.

I only wear cashmeres.

Buy the size small; don't put it in the dryer, lay it out to dry.

don't ever wash yourself and if you do just NEVER put it in the dryer. let it air dry.

best yet, take it to the dry cleaner.

Gap cotton sweaters haven't shrunk for me. Though they do stretch out after a few wears, but washing resets it, but only back down to the original size.

Haven't had issues with machine dry either.

And lands end, though I don't have any of their sweaters, are probably good about such things.

Oh, and the dry cleaning guy is wrong. Air drying will never hurt a garment, but dry cleaning certainly can. The chemicals used are harsh, and harm fabric over time. Anything that can be laundered with soap and water should be. Not to mention that dry cleaning isn't going to reset stretched out fabric.

And wool and cashmere sweaters should be washed by hand with gentle detergent and shampoo, then air dryed. Healthier for the sweater.

Care tags are always conservative. If it says cold/ tumble dry, then you will be fine washing it on cold and tumble drying.

LandsEnd cotton sweaters don't shrink. I've lost weight over the past year and now my (XL) sweaters are a little too big and try as I might - washing in hot water, etc. - they won't shrink. And unfortunately I don't trust my tailor to know how to take in knit fabrics.
