Corthay sizing confusion (or maybe it’s just my feet)

I finally pulled the trigger on a pair of Corthay Arcas on the Pullman last.

I have wide feet with a high instep and typically take an eu 44 with an insole. I was shocked that the corthays in a US size 12 were only a touch too big and a tongue pad rectified the mild fit issue.

is it common for them to run this small or is it just a a glorious convergence of hard to fit feet and a last that works?

Thanks.

They do run narrow from what I've seen (never owned) but I'm surprised size US12 would fit your feet in length if you're usually EU44 (around US10/10.5?).

That was exactly my reaction. Stock was limited, but they eyeball test said, “maybe” so I just tried them on.

I’d love to get more, but I’d like to wrap my head around sizing before I order something online.

I also take an EU44 and have a wide foot. This translates to a US11...not US10.5...in nearly every shoe.

I bought a pair of Corthay Twin (Pullman last) in US11 and they fit well - snug fit. No insole or tongue pad - just stock.

Good to know. Thank you!

A tad off topic, but my pair didn’t come with the metal tips. I’d like to have the added, but I’m concerned that this might lead to issues with the sticking or sole if I have them done by an independent cobbler.

Would you have then done or just wait until I need a resole?

Do you mean toe plates like these from Triumph? If you need these (mainly for people with unusually heavy wear pattern at the toe area (I do not use these myself), then a well-reputed and skilled cobbler can put these on your Corthays without harming the shoe at all...in fact the sole will last you longer, if your toes normally wear out before the rest of your leather sole.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
