Hello, Which is the correct direction one would sweep their tailcoat towards when seated? Is it the right or left side? Thank you for your time and expertise.

What side do you draw your sword/gun from? Sweep to the opposite side.

(I suspect the answer will actually be in line with something like this)

ON THE FULL DRESS {commonly called tail coat}, THE TAILS ARE SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE. NUFF SAID?

Tough call.

There was never a "proper" method because during formative years of the garment is was mostly worn by men with a valet who would press out any wrinkles. Sitting on the tail wasn't a problem, in the same way that getting mud on your boots isn't a problem.

I'd be interested in any historians (or etiquette experts) who could suggest a modern "proper" method.

In the meantime I would either sit on it, sweep it right (if questioned that sword thing has a ring of truth to it, might as well try to bluff it out) or alternatively in the direction away from a female placed next to you.

I was told by my tailor to sweep the tails back when sitting. No?

To-night I shall approach the table, pull out the lady's chair, gently push it in as she sits down with my right knee - and with a discreet, yet elegant coordinated double movement, split my tails to each side as I sit down

Happy New Year, fellow gentlemen! :bigstar:

Would any patricians be able to advise me on the best way to hold my toga whilst making a speech?

I'm having a toga party soon, you see, and the fellow guests are all people equal in rank to me or greater so I will be most ashamed if I don't get it right.

Your body slaves will hold your toga of course, and nubile naked virgins will fan you. Others will serve you wine from skins to ensure a moist palette and relaxed demeanor during your address.

That's a real place? I always thought that it was an inside joke for SFers.
