I am looking to purchase my first pair of corduroy pants. Before I do, I would appreciate a quick tutorial on what Wales are appropriate under different circumstances.

    Thank you in advance.

I gather that. I guess I was asking more about specific Wales.

    8 Wale
    10 Wale
    14 Wale

Is it ok to wear 10 Wale casually and more dressy as well?

I think it'd help if you define your definition of casual/dressy. Reason being, as a matter of conservative sartorial rules (if there are any), corduroys are for casual trousers. If your dressy means going on a movie date with the woman of your life, sure, by all means. If dressy means going to a restaurant (in America) which asks for smart casual, the 10/14 should cut it. But if your dressy means going to a cocktail reception, I wouldn't do it.

But, in this day and age, nobody really cares, unless you're horrifically out of place.

By casual I was meaning when I would typically wear jeans and by dressy when I would typically wear chinos or cotton trousers. I would most definitely not wear corduroy to a formal event.

Thank you for your input, kind sir.

Honestly, I think 10/14 wale cords are an attractive alternative to chinos, and when you want some variation in your wardrobe. They are quite versatile as well.

The 8 is probably as casual as your jeans, though don't forget that cords are probably not as durable as jeans, so if you're doing some rough work (gardening etc), you'd be better of in a pair of jeans.

For tthe benefit of any newbies, body type plays a factor. Wale cording is better suited to taller, slimmer gents. On shorter or wider gents, Wale only makes one look dumpy. Know your limitations.

    Up this topic.

Curdory pants look good on skinny or just slim fit?
