I'm looking to pick up a pair of shoes in Cordovan leather. I'm pretty sure they start at around $300+. What makes would you recommend? Vass, EG, Alden, C&J...?

Also, do the Weymouth's come in cordovan and what do they go for on Plal?

It's true Alden are large. For someone maybe they are too large. But the cordovan of Alden is the best one in my opinion.

I think genuine shell cordovan shoes will start more around $400 retail.

I hate Alden, but that's because I really want a pair and they don't have a last that fits me. -Tom [IMG]

both Allen Edmonds and Alden get their cordovan leather from Horween. I have cordovans from both companies, the leather acts, looks, and ages the same in both companies shoes. AE charges $415 for theirs, Alden a bit more, anywhere from $470-$525.

As a lifelong fan of the Alden tassel loafers, I guess I don't understand the reason for the cordovan fascination. They just look shinier to me. I stopped wearing the Alden cordovan in college (the shoes creased more deeply than the calf and, yes, I used shoe trees back then). These were expensive in the '60s ($32.50 was a lot of money) and still are. The BB cordovan bluchers do have a bit of "blob" in them besides being difficult to lift, which appearance is not cured by the addition of steel eyelets. But I guess if you're classic, it doesn't matter (or does it?). Awaiting the indignant responses of many (e,g, Superfly).

Stylestudent, do you prefer the tan/brown calf or the burgundy (as a substitute for the shell cordovan color) in the loafer?

I wear black and the dark brown suede (very smooth) in the tassel loafers and find that the suede works well with all shades of gray and tan trousers, especially if they have a bit of texture like a flannel or twill. I generally wear the tassel loafers with a jacket and tie but have Alden brown suede penny loafers for tieless occasions. Buttondown oxford shirts also seem related.

Manton: What last type do you have for the VASS shoes?

    Thanks.

Many, including folks in my own family, share your opinion, Manton, and certainly the cordovan is preferable to the burgundy calf. Whether to choose the burgundy color at the outset is obviously an individual preference. "Nuff (if anything at all) said.
