tsloop: Good choices. I thought of Caine in Alfie also. It's really tough to limit this list to 5. Heck, I thought Alan Arkin did a good job playing Yossarian in Catch-22. But, the movie couldn't match the book. In fact, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall deserve mentions. Sheen, mainly for his work in Apocalypse Now, and Duvall for that and many others. Then there's the always edgy Christopher Walken. Gene Hackman in several movies. William Hurt in Body Heat -- Kathleen Turner too (got to give mention to some women too). Nick Nolte in several. John Cusack. Ed Norton in the Hannibal movie (can't remember which one). Joe Mantegna in House of Games. Linda Fiorentino in Last Seduction.

And a forgotten name (because he died so young?) and a mighty good actor -- James Dean.

James Dean - I wouldn't consider him cool, I'd consider him depressed, and if I were gonna call his saddness cool, than lets please put Marlon Brando a few steps in line ahead of Dean.
