Cool "Night-Out" Shoes

As we head into holiday party season I'm looking to get a pair of shoes (preferably black in color although I'm not married to the idea) that will look "cool", but also stylish. I'm guess that I'm looking for a shoe that would be admired by somebody who is into clothes and style and somebody who isn't, both at the same time.

The shoes could be worn with a suit, but could also be paired with black (or blue) jeans just as easily. Formality isn't that important, otherwise I'd just break out the Black AE PAs.

My instincts lead me toward a pair of black slip-ons (high vamp Gucci or Ferragamo) or monkstraps, but something tells me I'm wrong.

Looking to stay definitively south of $600, but $300 would be even better.

What do you wear when you go out and you want to look "cool"?

I don't think monks are "cool."

BUt a nice pair of sleek chelseas might fit the bill.

My chocolate bl monks from Martegani always garner notice and comment. They're probably no longer available but something similar in style is very flexible.

I'd agree with Chelseas, but I think double strap monks, especially a sleek one, looks great out at night, the buckles hint at excitement.

I often wear these To Boots as a night shoe. Not so expensive that I'm paranoid about getting a drink sloshed about.

That. I'd add black jodpuhrs as well. Either extremely well shined or corrected grain - alcohol spills and fine calf leather are not friends

My dream "night-out" shoes are the Jil Sander satin lace-ups I saw pop up on ebay a while back. They just exuded sexy cool.

I think I get more compliments on my AE Moras than any other pair of shoes I own.

They retail at around $400, but during friends and family at Bloomingdale's in Chestnut Hill MA. They were marked down to $330, then clearanced 50% (to $165) then F&F 20% so I got them for $135 or so, tax free. It was quite a victory. I think they still have a few pairs at that $165 price. Zappos has them for $399 http://zeta.zappos.com/product/7434026/color/3287
