I got a super weird job in high school interviewing that guy, Rene Girard. I haven't thought of him since reading that. An oddball minister in my small, Vermont hometown approached our high school looking for kids to travel with him to Palo Alto to operate the cameras for his Rene Girard documentary (the whole deal seems headed down a real Me-Too path, but it didn't end up there). For some reason we stayed at the particle accelerator guest house, and I remember it was like a motel, but all the hallways were lined with photos of scientists, and microscope(?) pics of atoms. Rene Girard, man. How about that.

Also, your SkinnyGoomba cabinets are gorgeous. Congrats.

I’d just do a Danish chair from a Danish maker if I wanted a chair like this.

Well, for your purposes (matching the Prouve table), I wouldn’t do a Danish-style wooden chair at all. Aside from clashing two different woods together, the styles also don’t complement, with the Danish designs emphasizing craftsmanship and organic materials and Prouve expressing more of an engineered/industrialized modernism. Yet, they are not different enough to contrast interestingly—would just look like a mistake.

The other challenge you face is that tables are usually more anonymous than chairs, playing the part of background and stage. But the Prouve table is a very, very specific design that creates a very specific setting that you have to play to. I have been thinking about other options, but I really think you’ll struggle to do better than the Prouve Standard chairs in matching colors. Nothing wrong with a coordinated set—maybe just lay-off of the Prouve elsewhere in the room! Helps to also mix-in some more contemporary pieces so as to not look like you’re some sort of retro fetishist.

The people not on the ends have an awkward entry to the table. Women (people?) in skirts might not dig it.

This has been very on trend the past few years. Consequently, you see benches used in all sorts of situations where they are highly sub-optimal.

My approach would be to weigh whether it actually makes sense given your actual needs. Benches are harder to get in an out of. Not fun with kids or guests. Who wants to have to ask someone else to move so you can get up and use the restroom? They’re also less comfortable. Only potential advantages versus chairs are space, flexibility, and cost.
