But serious: **** you if you buy paper napkins and put them in a stupid little holder in the middle of the table. Nobody does that except weird old aunts. Kudos if you use cloth napkins but I’m doubting that’s more than a micro percentage of us. Nope. You are all using paper towels. Bounty if you’re not an animal. European? I don’t know. I guess you just live with sticky hands.
I am no animal! I use cloth (except for finger food).
hmm... we just buy those giant packs of paper napkins. Seems easier and more pleasant to use than tearing off paper towels. Which we of course do when we run out of paper napkins.

No paper napkin holder though.
ok boomer

0.07 gallon of water is required to produce a 0.08-ounce paper napkin
119 gallons of water is required to produce a 1.4-ounce cotton napkin + 0.1 gallon for every wash

10 grams of greenhouse gas emissions to produce a paper napkin
1020 grams for the cotton napkin + 5 grams for every wash

You have to reuse the cotton napkins A LOT to break even on the environmental impact. It's the whole plastic grocery bags with cotton tote debate again.

Good point. But how about linen, or hemp? This is Styleforvm.

We've used the same ones for about 10 years, washed once a week. We only do 2, maybe three loads a week, with 5 and 8 yr olds (compact HE washer and dryer, maybe dry half of that for about 10 mins and hang the rest).

Linen would definitely be a lower impact.

I'm not trying to discount using cloth napkins - we do that a lot too whenever we use tablecloths - but I'm just pointing out that (like for grocery bags) , the environmental impact of one vs the other is not as simple or intuitive as it may seem.

Used Pride every day for 6 years and love them.

I think that is one of the only sets they still make completely themselves. Apparently everything else comes from Japan and they just do final inspection in the UK.

Pride is really quite faultless. Love the knife handle.

^This place has nice placemats constructed like the ones I posted, but all cloth, so they'd be washable:
You could find others online, incl. Etsy, like these.

@TheFoo, that Pride set looks a lot more comfortable than the previous set.

Fwiw, we use used Laufer, Dansk, WMF stuff. I love used stuff and am the opposite re. some of the person's essence/spirt being in a used thing. I like that.

@gdl203, ours are linen, I think, but possibly hemp. I'm guessing hemp would have an even lower impact than linen. There's some pretty beautiful ones on Etsy.

I am actually looking forward to the wider, flatter handles. I hate spindly flatware that rolls and pivots in the hand. The Pott 35 seems like it would promote stability and give more surface area for grip and leverage.

The pride flatware is nice.

David Mellor has many really fantastic designs. I don’t know of any modern flatware designers with such a strong portfolio, except for Carl Pott—and they are very different.

I love Mellor’s Minimal flatware:

However, I don’t like the games that the company plays when it comes to what they make and don’t make. Most everything is contracted out.

There are other makers like Alessi and Georg Jensen that are well-known for their modern designs, but they partner with many different designers. Also quality is not really in the same league as either of the above.
