I think you have done fine so far. Getting rid of that mirror and the plastic chairs is a big improvement.

I recall you posting that painting (I think that one) months ago and I stated then I thought it was too big for that location. I still do, but...your choice. It's far better than the mirror in any case.

Lighting:
The chandelier = very generic. It needs to be more interesting, and either smaller or larger. In the context of the other photos of the space, I think larger/lower would overwhelm the room, the space/table would suffer from that, the painting would be blocked, so I would look at something either thinner and more vertical/elegant like a Flos "Fucsia"; very minimal but present like a "Frisbi"; or softer like a "GloBall" or some of the Foscarini "Rituals". At most complex Artemide "Logico", but I think not in that context.

Frankly a simple $10.00 Japanese paper lantern from a million sources or a real "Akari" for more substance in that same genre would look good. Something along those lines: simple form, proper scale, and translucent (not opaque like your other choice: that gold "shardy" chandelier is really bad imo).

Paint:
I believe you were not a fan of this idea either, months ago, but honestly I think the single most impactful improvement you can make now is to paint those purple walls white, the same as the ceiling.

I’d go with something wide low and airy for the chandelier. Not a solid surface that blocks the view of the painting, but something that has enough negative space to see the painting “through it”. Think hub and spoke type of chandelier. There aren’t that many interiors that I shrink work well for a Sputnik type lamp, but yours kinda does actually.

Any idea what style/make this coffee table is?

Given the marble (?) top I thought it might be Maison Jansen, but the rest (i.e. the legs) are minimalist/basic so not sure...

Oh well, at least I tried regarding the purple rain....

I would still advise caution regarding a "big 'n' low" chandelier. That space sure doesn't need any more idiosyncratic "statement pieces".

Does anyone have any chess sets that they like? I kind of want a statement set.

I remember when I was a kid my neighborhood friend's parents had a chess set that was hand carved, stone, semi abstract.

Sort of like this one but the colors were different and it wasn't explicitly Aztec. (It may have actually been this style, I do know it was green and white though)

I have a similar set in marble that I bought in Mexico years ago. You can find them fairly inexpensive from street vendors. One piece broke but otherwise it's a nice set that I didn't pay much for.

My parents have a marble chess set from Mexico from at least 30 years ago. Played many a game on that.

Most of the ones I saw when I was in Mexico look like they were mass produced somewhere in Asia. Not the same experience.

That may well be the case with the set I own. I'd care more if I played more often and was good at the game.

I inherited two sets from my grandparents. One is a wooden Spansih set they picked up when they lived in Spain after WW2, and a pewter Civil War set
