Contrasting collar shirts - yes or no?

I thought the fact that people in Hong Kong, who can't tell Michael Douglas from Michael Fox, would make them look less of a tool with contrasting collars. But having seen a guy in the office wearing just that...what a tool he was!

I think they are only acceptable when the contrast is very slight, preferably with some faint stripes on the shirt, and no contrasting cuffs. With a very carefully matched tie and suit.

Yikes! I wouldn't have ever paired that striped shirt with that suit - the chalk stripe is just too similar in weight and width to the shirt stripes. Check Lucky Strike's example in post #61 for a more tasteful example of stripe/stripe matching.



I actually have my own tastefulness question. I usually consider contrast collars too pretentious, but my favorite shirt is starting to wear a little around the collar and sleeves. I'd like to replace them but my tailor is out of the fabric. Would a contrast collar work with a checked body like this?

Change both the collar and the cuffs to white and it'll be fine.

I was planning on it. French cuffs, of course (instead of the button cuffs I'd be replacing).

Most of my shirts have both white cuff and collars I wear them quite often but sometimes enjoy the look of matching colors.

I've seen some MTM places offer a contrasting collar/cuffs in black. How would that look on a casual (non-suit) shirt?

I had a sky blue with white pinstripes and white collars, but I didn't like it. I sold it to a co-worker.

OK, if no one else will say it. Contrast collar shirts really should have French cuffs, either white or self. Button, never.

This is very good for part of a "power look" -- useful on the day when you need the team to sign off on your proposal (see Alan Flusser, Dressing the Man, New York, HarperCollins Publishers Inc., 2002, p. 27) That look is power! ("Sign here, 'gentlemen!.'") I had not really thought about it for social, unless you are going straight to the event from work. I do not see it as being "inappropriate" but I do not believe I would intentionally do it myself
