So thinking about getting her diamond earings for x-mas, only has CZ's currently and wants the real thing...

I have never bought diamonds and have no idea what to look for. She is petite and kind of dresses in the J. crew style of clothing. Probably doesnt want something gaudy or huge...

I read that with earings you can go lower on the clarity scale than with a ring, and thus find better deals, thats about as far as I've got.

I keep hearing ads locally for "our diamonds are garunteed to appraise for double," or seeing diamond earings at what appear to be good prices on groupon or overstock..but not sure what to look for and dont want to get a bad deal... I'd like to find a good price though, neither of us are currently making a large salary.

Thanks for any info!

Does she know thats what you're getting her for xmas? If yes, take her along to select. BTW, I have no idea how to pick but I'd probably go to a reputable store to make sure I'm getting the real deal.

The missus got a pair of diamond solitaires from me last night for graduating with her doctorate. I worked with a local jewelry maker who picked up the loose diamonds from the same wholesaler a number of shops buy from here in town. He works when he wants and is very particular about quality. A very nice 1/2c total weight for a few hundred less than typical retail. Finding a local artisan like this can often be a great way to go for simpler articles.
