Obviously it's often quite hard to tell what condition a pair of AE's are in when the picture is fuzzy. However, sometimes we don't have a better picture to go by. What are some key indicators you look for in regards to amount of wear on the shoe?

i.e. Worth 70 bucks?

Difficult to judge?

For $70, spend like ~$20 more and buy a "second quality" on sale directly from AE.

Two best indicators are:

1) the condition of the interior of the shoes.

If they are ragged out (i.e., discolored/blackened, sweat stains, etc), that is a good indication to pass.

2) the condition of the soles.

If the soles are heavily worn, you should probably pass. Also, look for a little hammer symbol branded into the soles. This indicates that the shoes have been recrafted (indicating even more wear).

However, before you go the eBay route, I would advise that you check AE outlet prices for firsts or seconds as they are having a special sale now.

With those you are buying a liability. They are in need of a resole.

Yes snipe for $50, if you get em great, if not no big deal. If you don't like them, flip em at most you lose $10 or whatever

Pardon my ignorance if this has been posted before, went through the AE website and couldn't find a link to AE seconds. Anybody knows where to find them?

They aren't on the website. Call the Shoe Bank in Port Washington (where the factory is) and ask about seconds. Pick out something on the website you like and ask if they have seconds in that style in your size. Seconds usually run around $230 bucks. Even better are factory seconds of discontinued models, which can go as low as $100. But if you tell them what you are looking for in terms of color, style and size, they will steer you in the right direction.
