I thought Steely Dan was a studio band, i.e. didn't perform live
So did I. I cant remember them ever touring.

Seen the Dan several times and I may be in the minority, but to me they are a studio band, first and foremost.

They toured in 1996 after they decided to reform the band, in 2000 in support of the new album Two Against Nature, in 2003 in support of the newest album Everything Must Go, last year with Michael McDonald and this year they hit the east coast and will go to Japan and Europe.
I must be missing something. Back in the day people would rave about SD: "Dude, you gotta hear this album - freakin' awesome!" I would listen expectantly, but it never happened for me. Yawn, big time.
One's appreciation of Dan's sonic awesome-ness is in direct proportion to the amount and potency of mind-altering substances consumed prior to listening. From experience.
