I recently developed a problem with my Toshiba laptop. Basically anytime I am listening to music or video the sound seems to break up. I have tried on Windows Media player with music and video, and on youtube with music and video as well.

What could be the problem? The laptop is a little over 2 years old with a broken DVD drive (I drunkenly ripped it off). I don't think the drive is the problem because it's been like that for months, and the sound issue has cropped up in the past week or so.

Maybe the speakers themselves are screwed?

Is the sound lagging or just being dropped? Try a different player (VLC for video). If that doesn't work, reinstall drivers, and then consider wiping the drive and reinstalling Windows.

Are you using headphones or the built in speakers?
