Comic-Con - hotels?

Random question, but this seemed like the most random forum in which to ask. For Valentine's Day I am getting my girlfriend a pass to the Comic-Con convention in San Diego in July. She's wanted to go since forever! We live in different states; I'll spring for the tickets and hotel and we can work out flight details later.

Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has suggestions on nice, pleasant, perhaps not horribly, horribly expensive hotels near the San Diego Convention Center? I haven't been there before so I don't know the area that well.

Hotels at Comic-Con International are always hot commodities and most book up early. Room inventory is constantly monitored for availability and updated frequently. Visit this page or call the Comic–Con Travel and Housing Desk at 1–877–55–COMIC on or after MARCH 19, 2009. Outside the U.S., please call 212–532–1660. Please do not call the phone numbers before that date, as they will not be operational until March 19.

NOTE: We have not been allotted enough rooms by the hotels to meet the demand. Rooms do fill up within the first few hours so you may want to book a room directly with the hotel of your choice now.

Find the hotels close to where you are staying at. There are probably a couple in the 3 star range that are only within walking distance of the convention center.

Go to priceline.com and look at their "zones" and make an offer. It cannot hurt and I got a really good rate once going to Atlantic City last minute.
