Color of second coat

Hey all. I have a pretty heavy 3/4 coat in dark grey. I'm shopping around for a half coat that's a bit thinner but am having trouble picking a color.

I'm wanting a camel/tan as my second, which seems pretty standard. But, b/c of my dark hair and pale skin, most of my wardrobe are blues, greys, blacks.

Is camel considered pretty neutral, and am I worrying over nothing, or, would that color be a mismatch with me being better off/safer just getting another grey or a navy coat (boring!)?

The color of your coat should go along with the style of the coat. It's not as simple as plugging in a new color -- the color should be harmonious with the style of the coat, and then harmonious with the style of your outfit and what message you're trying to send/ occasion you're dressing for.

You might find this thread useful.

Whoops, guess I should have searched before opening this thread.

Thanks. The halfcoat I'm looking at is way more casual, so I'm good there. But, not sure if it would look good on top of the colors I normally wear. I'm kinda leaning towards, no on this one I guess.

Can you say more about how you normally dress? I think the color of the coat should go along with the other details on that coat. And the style of the coat depends on how you dress.

Thanks! This is going to be for a go-to casual look as you said.

I'm used to wearing suits every day but the firm I'm at now is very casual and am having a little trouble putting stuff together.

After reading the entire thread you linked, yeah, I do think tan will work for me but I'll need to find a darker tan.

I find a slightly darker tan to be easier to wear.

Example, this color:

Versus this color:

That said, that color tan for an overcoat worn with casualwear can also work. I can't easily pull up many examples right now without resorting to streetwear/ Kanye cliches, as that's the look that most easily comes to mind. But you can imagine this with a slightly more conservative casual outfit like blue jeans and a cream sweater.

Would personally just avoid a tan 3/4th length, as that feels very 2012. Would go for a more classic knee length.
