Camel's out because it doesn't look good on me.

Black, charcoal, or navy? I've always been at a loss as to which is better/more versatile/more proper, eh any and all of the above? Can I wear navy with a charcoal suit?

I'm thinking single breasted 3 button, probably fly front full length coat here.
And do I want a herringbone pattern?

I really need some help here.

Black's for formalwear only. Plain charcoal or plain navy will look good; choose the one which will contrast most with your suit selection.

i believe a navy overcoat will go very well with a charcoal suit. a charcoal overcoat will probably go well with a navy suit also. either would be a good choice.

I find that I rarely wear my navy coat, even though it's a nice coat with an excellent fit. My charcoal/black coat is worn almost daily in winter. I also have a medium gray that gets very little wear.

I apologize if this is a plagiarization someone's post from a much earlier thread on this topic, but my mind immediately spits out the following:

First buy charcoal
Second, navy
Third, camel (not an issue for you, OP, so skip this one)
Fourth, medium grey
Fifth, black (for formal occasions (possibly bump this up to #2 if you attend black tie often))

Charcoal is definitely the universal color that can be worn on any occasion (except to a luau or volleyball game, perhaps).

Exactly right... The Great Chain of Being for overcoat colors from Lordofpi is dead-on, too.
