Na, seriously. The basic things: money, electronics, stationary supplies and whatever you think you will really use. Don't bring things that you will only use a few times. Where you headed anyway?

1) This is a bit dull but I am just finishing up at Uni and if I have one bit of advice it is to work out what you want from the place academically and socially and aggressively pursue it.

I ended up getting dicked around by the department I studied in and doing a bunch of modules I didn't want to do and it was only near the end that I figured out you really have to push for what you want I could have avoided doing so much crap, you can't get everything you want but you can get a lot of it, you just have to have a clear idea what it is and go for it.
Seriously, if you can get your academic stuff as ruthlessly organised as possible it makes having fun so much easier - doesn't mean doing any more work, but it does mean working out what you need to do well, what you just need to do and what you can get away with not doing and properly organising it, even if you decide not to do it that day, make it a decision, don't just leave it hanging. Be organised for signing up for stuff, if you leave it to the last minute all the keen wankers take all the good stuff, you have to beat them at their game to have the best possible time.

Socially you will have a much better time if you really throw yourself into it - to start of with join every society that even slightly interests you and go to every party you are invited to, you can quit what you don't like later.

2) I can't think of many physical things you will need, maybe some hangover medicine and a comfy pair of pyjama bottoms/track suit bottoms that you can hang around halls in and wear to lectures in the morning when you are too tired to get dressed. A large mug or glass to fill with water for next to your bed when you wake up hungover. Unless you want the same three posters everyone else has this bears thinking about also.

3) Instead of blowing all your money on new stuff for uni try and save some up and buy stuff once you get there and better know what you will need.

You don't need the shit, but yea, you can bring detergent and other toiletries.

Agreed, but you need to be careful. The whole sampling thing can turn one into an out-of-control party animal. Your grades come first, particularly if you are considering graduate studies. If not...probably doesn't matter as much. But Cal Poly is a good school, so I'm sure the OP will do well.

Wearing sweatpants/pajamas to class is for girls and meathead losers.

Some morning classes you can't miss, and some parties the night before you also can't miss, this is when these become useful. It's not a style thing its a practicality thing.
If the weather wasn't so bad here I would do this, as it is I usually pull on what I was wearing the night before and when I get back from class shower and get dressed for the day, somewhere with nicer weather you do the same but with pjs.
