What you're technically looking for I believe is a "collar bar" I have this one in silver: http://cgi.ebay.com/2-COLLAR-BARS-Si...6.c0.m14.l1318 And it works nicely for me. That said, there are those who will think you a pretender for not puncturing the collar, and it is worth knowing that with a good collar pin actually slides between threads, creating a hold which should disappear with a just a little rubbing. I'm not really worried about being a pretender. I know that the holes will disappear, but truthfully I don't run in circles that would turn their nose up at men. Hell, most don't even dress half as nice as the folks on here. Thanks for the information though.

IMO, collar bar looks much better than collar pins and could show some great personality.

What's the thing that pins the tie to the shirt called? No, I don't mean tie bar.

I have a vintage collar bar from my dad and would love to wear it. Does anyone have any real-life pictures of these in action? or any advice on how to wear one?

Can you wear it with a tie bar? would it have to match the tie bar?

What kind of advice are you looking for? I wear them with any straight collar shirt with a suit.

I probably would not wear both at the same time, but if you do, I think matching the metals would look much better.

Cheers, Jim.

Just browsing around a few of my favorite sites I cam up with these pictures:

Ralph Lauren generally does a good job of collar pins. Of course, he would, considering it's a "golden age" sort of thing to do, and he's known for bringing golden ages back into style...

Then there's this Sartorialist post:
http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/...-new-york.html

Based on these, and some other pictures I've seen, a few pieces of advice I'll propse:

1. Don't try wearing a collar bar or pin with a wide spread collar. Asphyxiation isn't funny.

2. It's often best to make it a sort of casual statement - not the dressiest time. Which goes with the no wide spread collars. I'd put it somewhere above a button-down collar for formality.

3. Wear it playfully. It is as its best when unexpected. Of course these days, collar pins and bars are expected like a Spanish inquisition.

4. Most important, wear it with character.

5. As an expansion on the two above points - do not wear it with a perfectly matching tie bar. That has all the fussiness of a matching tie - pocket-square combo. A playfully non-matching (but coordinated) tie bar might be fine... if risky.

Hope this helps!

My pleasure. I just wanted you to be aware... I myself think a collar bar is a sensible solution to no problem at all. Which is what makes it fun.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I think I'm going to rock it with my vintage glen plaid brooks brothers suit, and a cheap-y H&M shirt, and a vintage dior skinny tie.

If I can ever figure out my POS digital camera, I'll get some pics up for criticism/advice.

I'm thinking this would look really good with one of those Tim Hamilton club-collar oxfords. I keep meaning to try and cop one on ebay.

I found a bar type thing that grabs the collar, but doesn't puncture it, at Tomorrowland on Level 6 (or 7?) of Isetan in Shinuku. Wasn't too expensive either..

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
