I have seen a few sports coats recently that on one side of the notch collar there is a small nub of fabric with a button hole sewn in it. I have seen this before but what is the "official" term for this piece of fabric?

I assume a jacket with this nub of fabric is less formal than one without it. Am I correct? What else can anyone tell me about a jacket with this nub? Some of the jackets have patch pockets and others have flap pockets. Otherwise they look like regular sports coats.

If it is what I think you are describing, it's a throat latch I believe.

Yes that is what I saw. So is it for less formal sportcoats? Is there anything else I should know about jackets with this throat latch?

Yep - sometimes it is built-in, sometimes sewn on, sometimes detachable with a button. Hopefully, there is a corresponding button on the other side of the jacket, which allows you to button the lapels all the way up in the cold. It is considered a country detail and often found on shooting tweeds and styles derived therefrom.
