"Cocktail"

Hi all.

I could really do with some advice for a wedding I'm attending next summer. The invitation states that the dress code is "cocktail" but this is an early afternoon wedding outside, at the top of a cliff on the island of Jersey.

It would be great to hear of a few interesting suggestions of interpretations to this dress code, as simple black tie always feels a little phoney.

Cocktail feels and sounds just as phony.

Early afternoon and outside during the summer? Light colored cotton or linen slacks, a light colored shirt and a cotton or linen jacket. You might have to take the jacket off if it gets too hot.

I detest weddings exactly for this reason, but if you are asking me how I would interpret it given the season, time and location, that’s what I would do.

"Cocktail" is not really a well defined dress code at all. I agree w/ Phileas for the most part.

Blazer/Jacket + slacks. Shoes in the brown/burgundy/tan in a less formal style.

If you are worried about it, and know the couple well(ish) you can ask them what they envision.

If they are envisioning suits or black tie than they have chosen poor wording.

I have asked the groom and he has gone with "somewhere between smart casual and black tie" which ties in with this description:

I'm going with a fairly broad spectrum then, and your suggestions all sound good.

I’d err on the more casual side of the spectrum. You don’t want to be overdressed.
