Cocktail Attire

Hello! New member, but long-time reader . . .

I recently received an invitation to an event that requires that I wear cocktail attire. The event starts with cocktails at 6:00 p.m., and dinner follows at 7:00 p.m. The event is in the midwest, but many or most of the attendees will be lawyers from DC, New York, and Chicago.

I would appreciate any advice on what I should wear. In particular, would a conservative, dark suit work?
