It's been bugging me or months: what kind of cloth is this???

fauxtweed.jpg

Is it a worsted 'tweed', perhaps from P&H's Glorious Twelfth collection? I know it's not from Hardy's Worsted Alsport collection, and it is has a slight fuzz to it that my Worsted Alsport stuff doesn't. Yet, I don't think it is a true tweed . . . or is it?

Thanks!

You are right in saying that it is not finished like worsted Alsport. Nor is it a patter from the 'normal' Alsport book, though it seems to have a finish like a normal thornproof, except the pattern seems too well defined to be anything but worsted, though I could be completely wrong here.

How thick is it? Rub it between your fingers and compare it with any worsted Alsport or Glorious Twelfth you might have. Could you not ask Mariano what he used?

And to answer your question, What type of cloth is it? It is, regardless of its provenance, beautiful and an excellent pick.

It could be Johnston's of Elgin. I'm guessing it's around 700gms ?

Looks like it could be a saxony tweed

It is softer and fluffier than Worster Alsport, which is very smooth and has a hard finish. I could ask about it, but I'm assuming he won't remember off the top of his head.

Hmm. Possible. But it doesn't seem that heavy. I don't think it could be anything over 16 oz.

Definitely not Allsport or Glorious 12th. Looks like a real tweed to me, tighter than Shetland, but the same basic weave pattern.

Really? You think it's real tweed??? That would so make my day.

Definitely a real tweed, and my money's still on Saxony - I've seen saxony down to around 11/12 oz.

I think Johnstons of Elgin are one of the largest Saxony manufacturers, but I'm sure there are others.

Nice fabric anyway.

"Saxony" is not a tweed, it's a type of woolen yarn that typically makes soft flannels. Cheviot yarn makes tweeds.

That said, it's entirely possible that some company markets a book of tweeds as "saxony" but if they do they are being sloppy in their usage.

It looks very similar to an old Enrico Isaia jacket I have.

Is it a drape cut?
