So the wife and I are looking at houses, and one of the first renovations to be made on any house would be the closet. Every home comes with those cheap wire organization setups.

So I'll be shopping around for a proper closet. Any suggestions on who to use for closet solutions?

Ikea is not a bad place to start.

Ikea is a great option to start with. You can also go to Lowes or Home Depot and get ideas there. When we moved into our new ouse a couple years back my wife let me pull al the white wire crap out and do the closet in the Cherry wood from Lowes. It came out nice and has created a much more useable space. I have added drawers and shelves over the last couple years to make it hold things just the way we want.

If you want to do it right and don't mind paying for it, try California Closets. The closets are custom designed for your needs. I'm actually having them put in a new closet for me in a couple weeks. My parents used them and have quite a sturdy closet. A great closet is always a good investment for your house.

I had pretty good luck with this company http://www.easyclosets.com/. You can get a pretty good idea of the product and needed skill level if you go into Home Depot. HD sells, the Martha Stewart (can't believe I just typed that name) line, which looks like it is made by the same manufacturer.

Anyway, I was able to install 4 standard sliding door closet assemblies in 2 days. Would have been less time, but my house is 140 years old. Not a right angle in the place.

+1. But go to Costco and buy from them since they have a discount from CA Closets

So what kind of general pricing are we talking about with these closets compared, say, to the Elfa offerings at the Container Store? Twice as expensive? Three times? More?

The prices are in the ballpark. It depends on several things-size, what you want in the closet, etc.

These things are a pain to do yourself unless you have someone GOOD helping you. A GF telling you where it goes is not good.
