I have several vintage Comme des Garcons unstructured cotton jackets (no lining, no shoulder pads, etc), and need to clean them/

On some of them it gives the option of hand wash, but does it not damage the cotton fibers ? Or not more than dry cleaning ? Any advice ?

Thank you very much !

What does the label recommend?

Generally, washing cotton using a proper detergent should be fine. Wash by hand and line dry and it shouldn’t damage the garment.

it says : "hand wash, do not bleach, do not iron, dry clean, line dry"

Thank you ! I know it is a stupid question, but I am just not sure how it will affect a cotton jacket and its constrcuction, though CDG are rather well built, but for example it could elongate the fibers and make it look longer ...

of course, when you hand wash jackets or even shirts the cotton fibers swell with the effect of water and the shape can theoretically change

If they don't have any structure inside -- lining, canvassing, padding, etc -- then they should be fine for a handwash. Just soak them in some water and laundry detergent.

Water will not change the structure of cotton. Knitted items can sometimes get stretched out or fell, but this shouldn't be an issue with wovens.

Would be more concerned with cotton shrinking and distorting the fabric. Important how the fabric drys. After they dry I doubt they will look wearable without some pressing. Pressing a jacket is tricky and difficult. If you hand wash and then have to take it to a tailor or someone to press; would send out for dry cleaning first and avoid the hassle.

Whatever you decide, do one jacket first and see how you like the result

why do you want to clean it? Have a feeling it won't be the same after washing.
Dry-cleaning seems safer if you have a good one

How important is full vs half canvas to you for heavier sport jackets?
