Cleaning a vintage leather briefcase // Machine washing a Burberry trench

I've recently bought a vintage leather case, which while lovely has a really bad stench to it. It doesn't have any inner lining, it's all leather. I've tried airing it out, wiping it down with water, baby wipes and various other fluids with no success. Does anyone have any ideas for getting rid of the smell?

Also, I bought an old Burberry trench for peanuts, the buttons had been moved and moving them back has left holes on the fabric. I'm not willing to pay for it to be dry cleaned if it's not going to get rid of the holes, so I was thinking of just sticking it in the washing machine. Has anyone had success putting one through before? It's 50% cotton, 50% polyester so I can't see it doing too much damage, but I don't want to needlessly wreck it.

Cedar chips for the case, cold water/hang dry for the trench.
