A friend is looking for a classic storm coat.

Who sells a classic storm coat? (Double breasted, exterior made of thick cotton or wool twill, belted, and fur collar and lining (either fake fur or real fur)

It has a been a staple at Brooks, J. Press, and Paul Stuart.

Do they still carry it? If not, who does?

Thanks.

Friends don't let friends wear fake fur; either get the real thing or go with shearling. The shearling options are readily available from all the major players, although you may have waited too long to get it this season.

O'Connells. Expect low stock, though, since none of this is being made anymore.

There are hide-less alternatives.

Is it true that Invertere, the source of O'Connell's, is out of business?
I had heard as much maybe a year or so ago. But then I heard that
it either was not true, or that the firm had revived. In any case
I own such a specimen, purchased in Chicago 20!+ years ago,
as I mentioned in Ask Andy. Great coats. I never wear mine anymore
as I live in Palo Alto CA, where 40F is considered cold.

A more casual one from Engineered Garments. Shell is cotton ripstop and the lining is fake fur.

Thanks, Voxsartoria. Photo # 1 is it. Alpaca collar and alpaca lining.

I have the coat in photo # 2. Alpaca. I bought it about 8 years ago in Barney's under the Daks label. It says made in Great Britain. I was told that it was made by the same maker of Paul Stuart's bearcat coat.

I did some research this weekend when walking up Madison, and the following are my findings:

1. Brooks Brooks--nothing.

2. Paul Staurt--Nothing. A salesman told me that the store decided not to carry the storm coat and bearcat coat this winter so that there would be a change in inventory. However, customers have been asking for it, and it will be carried next year.

3. J. Press--nothing. They had a couple, but they were sold.

4. Joseph Banks--nothing.

5. Saks--nothing.

6. H. Herzfeld--They have a wool version in green twill in the window. The store was closed.

If your version of photo 2 is alpaca, rather than wool pile, I would love to see it. I believe photo # 2, like the Bear Cat, is wool pile. I sometimes walk by Herzfeld as they are opening. I will check on it, if you like, this week. Tell me what you want to know.

Ian in Seattle had a medium and large, for about $200 each on sale (marked down from about $700-800 I think). http://ianshop.com/

My alpaca looks identical to the wool pile depicted. My coat is similar to the O'Connell storm coat in length and styling except no epulets and no cuff belts.

Thanks on the offer, but I spoke to Jon Cline as to the particulars on Herzfeld's coat. It is belted and made in England by another maker. The exterior is a wool twill.

To revive this thread for a friend looking for a storm coat, who offers one in NYC?

The storm coat that we have in mind is a full length coat, double breasted, belted, and can button at the neck. It is in tan, taupe, or khaki in either cotton or wool twill. The one depicted above from O'Connell's is an excellent example. This used to be a staple at Brooks, Press, and Paul Stuart.

Incidentally, H. Herzfeld sold its last one.

Who stocks one in NYC? Paul Stuart? J. Press?

Thanks.

This coat is for a client-friend who wants the coat now and does not want to spend that much money. He also wants it now rather than the later winter.
