Is there anything better as far as a classic peacoat?

Any basic navy peacoat is fine and quite a workhorse coat for winter. There's no need to shell out for those reproductions that are made in cashmere blend or something. Personally, I'd go to a place like www.american-armynavy.com and get one for half the price, or check out your local surplus store.

I don't like the recycled wool/nylon stuff. No offense to anyone who owns one, but I wouldn't do it. If you do a search, you'll see that I'm a pea coat Nazi and I really think you should make the effort to find an old one in good shape. However, the new Sterlingwear models get good marks from what I've heard. I think Brian SD has one. They're around the same price as the Schott.

And I don't know what they're smoking, but a pea coat should never be large enough to wear over a suit. It should fit snugly over a sweater, and be no bigger than that. The older ones were cut with smaller armholes and it wouldn't be possible to get a suit jacket sleeve through one comfortably.

It's buttoned the wrong way; that singular button-hole is for the inner button.

I several dozen Schott leather jackets and really like them. However, I agree that the wool/nylon mix is not that great. RL Polo has great peacoats in wool or in cashmere. Here are some peacoats:

1. RLPL wool/cashmere
   
2. Marzotto Labs leather
   
3. RLP shealing
   
4. RLPL wool/cashmere
   
5. Jil Sander suede
   
6. NM merino
   
7. RLP cashmere
   
8. Prada leather

i was in the RL rugby store the other day browsing for the first time and noticed a black peacoat for $250. might have to go back and try it on. anyone have experience with the rugby line, or know of its quality in comparison to other RL stuff?

How is the quality of Schott's jackets in general and leather ones, in particular?

I have a peacoat that's composed of a wool/nylon blend, and it's held up fine. Dark navy, almost midnight colour. The armholes on it are vintage-small as well. I wouldn't think of wearing a suit under it unless it were REALLY fitted.

Having grown up in my families' Army & Navy surplus store, In Philadelphia, I think I know a little bit about peacoats.

They are too stiff and short to wear over a suit jacket. that was not their purpose. Just wear them over thick wool sweaters.

The schott jacket is great for that.

The more expensive stylized brands will have softer wool and might serve as a car coat type over coat.

I have that Schott peacoat in black leather and it's great. I wore the heck out of until about 5 years ago and it's kept me warm during many cold Canadian winters. The only drawback is that it's very heavy.
