Classic black tux or dark blue suit for university ball with non-specified dress code?

(I had previously posted the same question in a wrong subforum.)

I have both of these - and both of them tailored as well.

Oscar Wilde did say, that "you can never be too well dressed", but... I am beginning to doubt the tux option a little bit, based on last years' pictures of the same ball (two guys in a tux, some in regular suits, and many in jeans + dress shirt which I think is abysmal to wear to such an event) BUT on the other hand, I have never had a chance to wear it on such an occasion, and I'd really like to...

Which option do you guys think I should go for?

If you are taking a date, it's important to coordinate with them on the formality of what they plan to wear. If you are going by yourself, both can work. You just have to be OK with the fact that you will be much more formally dressed than most. I don't know the particulars of your university or culture but I would say - if you are going with a date or friends or are a very sociable person, the tux will work better than if you're solo and a bit of a a loaner. If you're more of a loaner than dressing more formal than most everyone will likely have more of a negative reaction among your peers. In which case, a well fitting suit is probably the better choice.
