I've read some of the other threads here, but had some questions for my situation. I'm going to see Clapton/Marsalis next Thursday at the Lincoln center. It's a "bluesy blacktie" event, which I think just means it's a black tie event. I don't own a tux and was going to wear a dark navy suit with a white shirt and black patterned tie, but my friend said to either go with a black suit (I don't like the fit) or rent a tux.

Is the navy suit a bad idea? If so, I'll probably rent a tuxedo. I probably want spend less than $200 for everything and want to keep it simple. Jacket, pants, shirt and tie. I know most would probably recommend buying one, but I don't have the funds nor the need for one. Could I just rent the pants/jacket (and maybe shoes) and where a white shirt with a modern black/grey tie from Burberry (similar to this: http://images.saksfifthavenue.com/im...3R_396x528.jpg) - I'm guessing most will say nay on the tie

The event is in one week and I will go to the tux rental tomorrow. Any recommendations in Manhattan?

Sorry for the long post, but your help is much appreciated!

Definitely wear a bow, whether you wear anything else is entirely up to you & how many laughs you expect to receive.

So is the navy suit okay or should I go with the tuxedo rental?

If they say it's black tie, they probably mean black tie, i.e. get a tuxedo. You might want to consider buying from Jos. A. Bank if you want an inexpensive tuxedo. While the brand name is generally reviled around here, their Signature tuxedos have all the approved hallmarks of classic black tie (e.g. peak lapels in grosgrain, one button, no vent), and would probably be better in both fit and quality than a rental. The current JAB sale has them for just under $400, which should pay off compared to renting just a few times.

^Burlington Coat Factory has a tux here for about $100! Last time I was in there I saw a crowd of Hutterite guys gathered around the display.
