Camel Turkish Silvers or Lucky Strike (unfiltered, or course). Granted, I live on Tobacco Road.
I've never smoked a Luck Strike before, but if I'm going to smoke, Silvers are my go to. Are the Lucky Strikes comparable? Also, where are you getting them- I have yet to see a pack in person. As far as the act itself is concerned- I do it on occasion. I was hooked over this past summer, so I decided to quit. After a couple of months I decided to give it a try again. Now I'll go through a few with a buddy over the course of a weekend once a month or so.

This is a very old thread but i thought I'd bring it up again.

We are currently going through a health crusade in the UK. Smoking is banned in all enclosed public places. It can be difficult to rent a flat if you smoke. Cigarette packs now have pictures of cancerous lungs and babies on ventilators. In Scotland they are considering banning vending machines and displays in shops.

It's getting the same with alcohol. Adverts on TV about not exceeding the recommended amount of units per day. For men that is 3 to 4. Depending on what you drink that is under 2 pints. That would work out at 3 bottles of wine per week being the MAXIMUM a man could drink. Think about it, does 3 bottles of wine in 7 days seem excessive when you take into account weekned parties, nights out etc. You must get yor 5 fruit and veg a day but too much fruit will damage your teeth. Frankly it is getting over the top and ridiculous.

I smoke occassionally and drink but not to excess (often) I know all the associated health risks. I am sick to the back teeth of having it rammed down my throat on a constant basis. If I follow all the rules and advise life could become a lot more dull.

As for people who constantly tell me to stop smoking, if it directly affectsyou, fine, I shall do it elsewhere. If not, sod off and let me live my life you sanctimonious shits.

Sorry for the rant but had to get it off my chest.

we just got the public smoking ban here in the netherlands, I'm feeling your pain.....

then again, if they are going to limit alcohol too i'd be willing to pick up the pitchfork and torch and show my government how I truely feel about their policy....

I just took my personal alcohol licence. In september in Scotland all "irresponsible" drinks promotions will be banned eg happy hour, double spirits must be twice the amount of a single anything that would encourage someone to buy the drink because it is cheaper. They are also considering bringing in a minimum price per unit.

Smoked for too long - Escort Blue, then red, Peter Styvenson your pasport to international smoking pleasure, B & H and finally Peter Jackson Extra Mild, down to Rich Flavour.

For flavour, style and smell I'd go for a good roll your own/pouch tobacco if you have the patience.

With scotch though - Cigar goes best! Never got into pipe smoking some friends did though.

Smoke free again and for the long term. Here in Australia not disimilar to the UK we have all the anti smoking ads which are starting to gross me out now. As well as banning it from pubs and clubs and wont be long before it's prob banned in the mall in Adelaide. Or they start fining the smokers that dump their butts on the sidewalk.

Smoking does look cool - but what wasn't cool though was bums/street scum asking me for a cigarrette then a light (be nice if we could have right wing death squads to remove those urchins here).

Whiney or is it wheesy asthmatics - man the f..k up. Oddly some of the smokers I knew and broke tobacco with on occassion, were asthmatics as well (never understood that).

The impression some co-workers got and felt it was ok to spread this crap around, that the moment you weren't at your desk or out of contact 'you were obviously sneaking out for a smoke'.

Plus when you see the 'smokers' congregate in their smoke clubs outside their office buildings - just doesn't appeal to me. I kept my smoking low key on the job - so not many co-workers knew of my habit.

The only absolutely cool way to smoke though is on your own third world tobacco farm in a white suit and be referred to as Colonel Cullpepper ...the nicotiene dream!

Let´s leave the health consequences of smoking aside: unless you´ve lived on Mars for the last 40 years, you already know it kills half its users. [IMG]

I can´t imagine a less classy "habit" than smoking. Nothing reeks more than a smoker, and people know what Big Tobacco bribed the movie majors with to make Bogart look "classy".

These days, most smokers look like addicts on the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder - not the "classy" bon vivants of the early 20th century.

If you can't think of a worse habit than smoking... you are clearly not from the South.

    Chewing tobacco/dip/snuff - vile shit.

Yes most smokers do. But when you consider "most smokers" you will probably bring to mind a shaven headed, tattooed, benifit claiming lout. But is there not something slightly elegant about pulling out a cigarette case, lighting it with a fine vintage lighter and smoking with a little panache as opposed to bob the builder with his roll-up hanging from his lip or pinched between his nicotine stained fingers. That however is, I feel, irrelevant. I have never maintained that smoking is cool. To be honest I would say that to smoke because it is cool is the least cool thing you can do. Being a sheep and following the crowd is not cool. I smoke because I enjoy it. I enjoy the taste and it helps me relax. I just want to be left alone to do something I enjoy rather than have everybody look down their nose or try to stop me just because they have jumped on the health nazi bandwagon.

Tell me about it. Nanny state or what! Just because of the issues of the minority the majority have to suffer.

Well apparently in five minutes a pack of smokes will be taxed a dollar more here.

I roll my own so it doesn't affect me, but I'm still livid about this bullshit.

Have you seen the tax increase on roll-your-own tobacco thought? The tax on a pack of cigarettes will go up $1. The current tax on a pound of loose tobacco for roll your own is about $1.10, and it will go up to almost $25. You are probably paying less than $25/lb currently, so the new tax could triple or quadruple your cost.

I've never smoked a Luck Strike before, but if I'm going to smoke, Silvers are my go to. Are the Lucky Strikes comparable? Also, where are you getting them- I have yet to see a pack in person.

They are pretty much extreme opposites. Lucky Strikes have no filter, and little bits of tobacco get in your mouth. You don't have to pull as hard on them though, and they are shorter. I admit they are a little hard to find, even in a town littered with their old warehouses and smoke-stacks.

What's with all the bitching and moaning about smoking? It's not like there aren't hundreds of other habits that are just as bad for you and the people around you.

Who wants to live a life free of anything dangerous? Go live in a bubble.

I smoked about a 1/2 pack a day for over 15 years, and it's now been 5 weeks since I quit. I'm not one of those people who can be a social smoker. I envy them I suppose, though at this point looking back I don't see what's so cool about it. All you're doing is inhaling smoke. I mean it's pretty ridiculous when you stop and think about what the activity actually entails. But, alas, I'm like the guy at the AA meeting - I'm an addict, and I can never have another cigarette as long as I live. Some might see that as a shame, but having smoke tens of thousands of them already, I think it's a blessing. I just hope I haven't done permanent damage - I have read that if you quit before the age of 35 you become just as likely to develop lung cancer and other smoking related diseases as an average non-smoking doctor. I guess we'll see. But, there are times where I definitely want a smoke, but I just stop and think about the health implications, and the fact that I work one day a week in a hospital and often see the horrid affects of lung cancer, and then quickly change my mind.

However hard it is in the UK, Vancouver is 10000000x worse. Smoking here automatically lowers your social standing.
