So, I am trying to buy a gift for a friend and he has no real style, in the sense that it is not defined. He wears New Balance 991s some of the time, boat shoes some of the time, Nike Dunks some of the time. His pants go anywhere from Earnest Sewn to Diesel to 7FAM to Nudie. His shirts go from Polo and Lacoste to Trovata. His sweaters range from Ever hoodies to Cablenecks from Polo. His hair style is shorter and he has darker complexion. He is from Dubai. I need to get him a gift for Christmas and want to help him define his style a little bit more, but I don't know which style to recommend for him and which type of gift to get him. Should I recommend a more preppy, conservative style or a more trendy style?

The two items he expressed interest in were a new pair of New Balance 991s and a pair of Nike Dunk Pro SB Lows. I don't know which to go with and how to help him define his style, a problem that he has asked me to help him with.

All relevant thoughts and suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

Many times he also wears Khakis. Less frequently, but on a rare occassion, also Blue preppy pants.

How about a book on style? Or is that an insulting gift. On the plus side it sounds like he'll like anything you get. I think it's hard to define someones style for them, even if they ask for help. If you go for clothes I would shoot for something that is more classic than trendy, something that will always be in style and can stay in their wardrobe.

I generally go for the "don't buy clothes as gifts" rule. Buy the man a gift certificate or a book. The Sartorialist had good things to say about Rebel Style.
