Recently I've been looking for a pair of flat front dress pants for work. Though 33s fit my waist well, several pants that I've tried on seem to flare out too much around the pockets (I guess I just have no hips). I'm a pretty lanky guy and have always had this issue with pants. Do you think buying 32s and having the waist let out an inch would help with this problem or can a tailor correct the "hips" on 33s? Appreciate the input.

I always thought the pockets flared on people that do have hips.

Do they have to be flat front? Pleats might help with that problem.

And my reaction is the same as scnupe's. My general sense is that pockets flare because pants are too tight in the hips, which means that your hips are pushing the pockets out rather than letting them "hang free". Sizing down and letting the waist out would seem to exaggerate this problem.
Also, where does the waistband of the pants sit? Your true waist or down lower where you'd wear jeans? Dress pants usually should sit at your waist, more or less just below your belly-button. If you wear them down low on your hips like jeans the fit isn't going to look right.

I agree with the above posters. Generally, I think it's best to buy pants that fit in the seat and hips, then tailor the waist as needed. If the pockets are pulling, it is usually because the front of the pants is not wide enough for your body. Perhaps you need to visit a store and experiment with sizes.

Thanks guys, sorry I guess I didn't explain well but its sort of hard to describe.

Because I dont really have hips the extra material that is built in to the pants to allow for bigger hips just kind of hangs loose on the sides and doesnt follow the contour of my body.

In other words the typical pants:

waist - fits
hips - baggy
lower thigh - fits

I'll post a pic later to better show what im talking about.

This problem might be caused (or exacerbated) by onseam pockets. Try buying pants with slanted pockets instead.
