Chinese New Year Event

I have to go to a business dinner that is essentially a networking opportunity within the Chinese business community.

Any suggestions of attire that would be (or more importantly) would not be appropriate. For example - is there a "bad luck" / "good luck" associated with New Year's celebrations?

Yes, but it is not uncommon for New Year's celebrations to take place over several weeks. For example, NYC Lunar New Year Lantern Festival is this Sunday.

It is traditional to wear only new items for the new year. At the least, avoid anything that looks old.

Remember, never rest your chopsticks by sticking them in your bowl of rice. This is done only for gifts to the dead.

Red is the lucky colour this year.

This Sunday is the last day of the fifteen-day long CNY.

The first dish at the table will probably be a kind of Chinese salad with raw fish slices. You're suppose to use a pair of chopsticks to lift up the ingredients in unison with the other diners, shouting all kinds of lucky remarks that are good sounding for business. The higher the salad can be tossed, the more good Qi is generated.

Some circular patterns, like on your tie, would be a good subtle way to observe the Chinese New Year.
