Chinese(Mandarin) collar shirts?

Hello!So i was re-watching Rocky today and in Rocky 4 i saw Apollo Creed wearing a Mandarin collar shirt and i liked it pretty much but i think fashion has slightly changed from 1985 and so i'm asking you is it okay to wear them or i'll be banned for that?i'm talking about something like this

I actually didn't find any shirts like this in our shops so i think i'll ahve to order it from Modern Tailor or somewhere else.

When do you think it would be appropriate to wear this shirt? I cannot think of an occasion where a shirt with a proper collar would not be the better choice.

I think more for casual wear,like going to university,even going to clubs or something with jeans,tucked in.I imagine it being in red blue stripes.But i think MAY BE a black one from very good material will look good with blazer for evenings?

i used to like them. wore a black one to prom like a decade ago with a black suit lol. shanghai tang does them alot. i guess they go with their mao jackets and jeans or something. maybe a colarless belstaff i dunno. haven't thought of them in a long time. i'm chinese though so there's that.

these are points to ponder...allow me to answer when the only time appropriate to wear one....if you star in a kung fu movie...maybe then...just MAYBE. those shirts are awful. ive never seen anyone look good in one.

When they are worn under a Mandarin jacket, all buttoned up, so that you can only see a thin white line of the shirt's collar above the jacket's similarly cut collar.

As long as it's casual, has a pattern (windowpane, wide stripes), and you don't wear a necktie with it, it isn't that bad. It's better than a crazy open spread collar that's pancaked onto the chest/shoulders like a huge lapel I seem to see every so often.

I would say never... But there's a list of things that when I when I was young and ignorant and first came to SF I felt the same about, only to gradually become a fan of: suede shoes, grenadine ties, ankle boots...

Not for me but a better-looking version of the shirt was featured in a J. Peterman catalogue; can't remember which of the 14 I get each year. Rather eccentric, as with much of his stuff.

It's a band collar. The style source is shirts that once had detachable collars. The collar would fasten to the neck band of the shirt body. Workingmen would wear their shirts without the collars attached. They may be creeping back into style as guys want to look like working men of olden tymes. A Mandarin collar has a higher band and is more suitable to more formal occasions, esp with a comparably collared coat.

I have no problems with these collars when worn casually. I actually quite like them with say a couple of buttons undone and a pair of shorts when going down for a walk along the beach or something like that on a hot day. But then style forum is sort of weird in the sense that probably half the members here think wearing shorts is a sin.

Then again I'm an Asian so I look good in just about any style hahahaha.
