Going to Chicago soon, and I was wondering the best places for SW&D shopping. I saw there was a thread for Chicago shopping back in 06, but I'm assuming a lot of the stores may no longer exist, given the recession. So what are the places you guys would recommend?

I'm also open to restaurant suggestions (would prefer things in and around the Loop).

Apartment Number 9 and Penelope's are decent. If you want to check out some goth ninja gear, Gamma Player is for you.

Haberdash in Old Town is nice - I have picked up some nice stuff at solid discounts.

As far as restaurants go it depends on what you're looking for. For a nicer lunch place I recommend Xoco. The chef there is Rick Bayless of Top Chef fame. You won't be disappointed. http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/xoco.html For nicer Italian Rosebud is a good choice. http://www.rosebudrestaurants.com/ Another decent lunch place is Rock Bottom Brewery. They only serve their own beers. And make sure you go to the brewery part and not RB Grille. http://www.rockbottom.com/home There are a ton of great Sunday brunches as well. The only one that I've gone to in the Loop/River North area is Rockit and I highly recommend it. They have a great bloody mary bar. http://www.rockitbarandgrill.com/ And if you're looking for Chicago pizza you're going to want to try to stay off the beaten path so you don't wait 3 hours for a table. The main places for that are Giordano's, Lou Malnati's, Pizzeria Uno, Pizzeria Due, and Gino's East. You might be better just getting it delivered if you're that curious. One last recommendation if you decide you want to venture out of the downtown area. For one of the best, most unique burgers you're going to want to hit up Kuma's Corner. Just don't go Friday-Sunday or during any traditionally high-traffic hours otherwise you'll have an hour wait minimum. I try to go on a Wednesday or Thursday at 3-4pm. http://www.kumascorner.com/

For food, the best pizza I have ever had is at Great Lake in Andersonville. It's tiny, and you have to wait forever for take out, so if you are even thinking of that call the minute they open, or show up when they open to get a table. It's not deep dish (I don't like that anyway), but it is damn good. I can't say enough good things about it. I used to go there before they blew up with reviews in GQ, etc...and I still go there, even though the service takes forever.

Some people complain about the prices, but I think you get what you pay for, which to me is perfection.

I've been to Penelope's a few times and never found anything of interest. Pretty boring. Apt #9 has better editing but it's so small, again, I've never found anything of interest. Gamma Player is fun, especially if you've never seen gothninja gear IRL.

RIP, Hejfina.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've never been to Chicago before, so I really wasn't aware of almost all of this stuff.
