Hello all,

I was wondering if there are any good men's clothing stores in Chicago that I should check out (that I haven't been to already). In particular, any that have good sales or frequently carry a decent amount of clearance items. And, I'm not looking for any department stores.

Here are the places that I have visited.

BB
Hickey Freeman
Paul Stuart
Syd Jerome
Nordstrom Rack
Filene's Basement
George Greene
Mark Shale

Any others I should check out? For example, does Morris & Sons or Richard Bennet have decent sales or a decent amount of clearance items? Any other places like those two that I should visit?

Thanks

When I lived there I bought all of my tailored clothing from Mark Krope and Alan Grecco at Ralph Lauren and my casual stuff from Quentin at Brooks Brothers. Also, check out my friend Tony's second hand shop, Duomo, on Broadway between Diversey and Wellington.

If you don't want to be helpful, then leave the snark outside. I've already done a search, but I couldn't find threads that were particularly helpful on my specific questions.

Ah, I hadn't heard of Duomo before. Thanks.

I scored some really great items over the years from a heavy vintage Polo overcoat to a Chester Barrie DB suit. You can use Adi up the street for alterations if you live in the area.

I hadn't heard of them. I'll have to stop by the next time I'm in Chicago.

Orvis has a huge sale on currently.

Morris & Sons is great and well worth a trip.

Check out TESSUTI on Oak Street (just East of Barney's on the North side of Oak). Small boutique packs a big punch. Not a lot of clearance items but solid, every day deals on Pal Zileri jackets, outerwear and a great tie selection. Given the reasonable base prices, any items on sale will be great values. They also carry a decent amount of reasonably priced casual/dress shirts and jeans.

you might also want to check out Dei Giovani, at 181 W Madison Street. That was the place I bought my first nice italian suit-- as I recall, one of the sales associates cut open the bottom seam of the jacket to show me the construction of the suit was sewn instead of glued. Nice store, you can probably find sales there this time of year.

  • Saks Fifth Avenue's mens store on Michigan Avenue has a decent selection of shoes - Edward Green. They also stock Church's and Barkers (I think). But prices are high.
  • Nieman Marcus at Oakbrook has a limited selection of John Lobbs. No Lobbs as NM on Michigan Avenue. Again, prices are high.
  • Altman's Shoes on Monroe has AE and Aldens. They also have a huge inventory of shoes in their basement that're not on display. Go in. Ask for Carlos or Michael. If you know what model you want, they have an inventory book they can look in for you. That's how I found a pair of black AE Brantley oxford ankle boots. Regretfully, they were a just too narrow for my feet.

Thanks for searching first. ^ Good riposte too.

Can't forget the AE Shoe Bank in Port. Washington, WS. If you are interested in AEs, it's worth driving a couple of hours up there. It's a good excuse for a day driving trip out of Chicago.

Oops, I forgot to mention:
  • HartMarx outelt in DesPlaines on Touhy.
  • HF Outlet in Merrilville, Indiana.

I haven't been to either so I can't vouch for either one.

That answer his question in almost the same way that people have in this thread.

Not to turn this into a flame fest, but annoying responses like this get to me.

Those above threads contain information primarily regarding departments stores, which I specifically stated I was not interested in. Some of the posts mention discuss boutiques but that is an underinclusive response to my original request.

So, no, those threads don't really help.

Thank you everyone who actually answered my request. You all have provided some great information.

Report from my Visit to Morris & Sons:

First off, the store is in a sketchy part of town outside of the loop. Have to go through a buzz door to even get in.

The interior of the store is quite nice though. They carry pretty much every good Italian brand of clothing. Lots of Kiton, Brioni, Borrelli, etc. They also have a nice selection of Stefano Ricci.

While hardly a cheap store, everything (or almost everything) is always "30%" off of retail. As such, while it is hardly Nordstrom Rack, SF, or ebay prices, you can get your $375 Truzzi shirt for less than $300 any day of the week.

The store was disappointing on the MTM front. They barely do any MTM because they stated it was too annoying and time intensive sending things back and forth between Chicago and Italy. They do though handle Jack Victor MTM (or more precisely CMT), which I'm checking into more.

That said, the staff was friendly and not pushy. The salesman didn't mind talking with me for about an hour, even though I made it clear I was just checking out their store. All in all, a nice place, but I may not frequent it much.
