I would say that is more casual.

Something like this would be more like the current chic for the "Thomas Pink" checks popular with the NYC crowd with a suit.

Edge stitching + mitered cuff + busy check = not CDB. Sorry.

However, in today's world you almost never have to dress conservative business dress, so what the hell.

I do like the pattern, but I would tone down the detailing for my purposes.

Hmm. The big check would be tricky. It's quite dandy and depending on your profession may speak of a too young, hip and perhaps too trendy. So I'm strongly anti what the sales guy is saying about it being too mature, when in fact, I see it as a sign of a young dandy.

Now what FIHTies presents is a great check as it's very understated and would seem to look great without offending anyone no matter what the age of the wearer.

I'd say the check size should be determined with what image you want to present and also the size of the wearer as stated by earlier posters.

This is perfect though:

I bought my best shirt ever,a checked one, in Paris 10 years ago in a shop at the bottom of the Champs-Elysees....
Gian-Franco Ferre couture with squares and plain coloured collar........
A real beauty and as i was at that moment short of cash ,it took me a few months to save for it.....Was £170 ten years ago!!!!
I still got it in my wardrobe...

That check pattern is more along the lines of what I was looking at in the store. The shirt I was considering was button cuff and had slightly thinner lines.

I am not sure if you are referring to the shirt I posted. But if I could use your comment to follow up by saying that I posted this shirt as an example of the English checked shirt chic currently in vogue with the NYC professional set with or without a jacket and tie.

Although I wasnt suggesting you had to use this particular one because there are plenty of variations, it might interest you to know that in the City of London and England itself this is considered a classic amongst most of their men. I suppose the key is the shade of blue, the amount of white showing and the strength of the color in the check being the same in both directions.

I was thinking more of this. I think it's actually very 'hip' and cool to borrow your phrase. I would consider it depending on the affair to be attended and to show a more casual, lighter, fun and youthful demeanor. I would put a big double 4 in hand Navy tie with this shirt on a summer day and I think it could look great if I wanted to be more dandy for the day. But for a younger guy trying to make his mark a more understated check MIGHT be a better(safe) play depending on his field of endeavor:

Classic. So as someone who doesn't either live or work in NYC, what else is all the rage in Gotham?

Intersting replies to my conservative business dress inquiry. I should add that the "all the rage" in nyc is turning me off to LARGE checks. I see this "look" everywhere now and it seems very affected. Whilst it may be classic in london, for some reason to my eyes in this city, it is as stated above very "thomas pink" vouge right now. Hence my inqury about FIH small check shirt. I would love to see some pics or links to smaller more discreet check shirts that lean more towards conservative business dress.

Well, I'm still in my 20's (albeit barely) and checked shirts are my favorite. If you like them then wear them!

Indeed. Its why I maintain you should buy the FIH one and avoid the herd mentality of large checks.

Agree. I think yours is much more passable in a business environment than the larger louder shirt posted though I like them both.

If you are speaking about a Dress for Success approach with a healthy dollop of anxiety over being noticed then I can't help you except to say that I would be surprised if a check would be worn at all.

I would think even a smaller check shirt would need some "pop" to it. This isnt my shirt but at least it isnt dull or muted or dingy which I think is a mistake for a checked shirt with a suit. Maybe with a plain sport jacket and even then I would consider it a fear of standing out and picking a well defined color or pattern resulting in an even worse and supposedly manly choice because it looks like a lumber jack shirt.

Sorry about the lighting. The photos were taken in a hurry. But you can see that the colors are crisp even if the check is smaller.
