Looking for a cheap hotel in the NYC area for Mon and Tues nights.
I was considering one of the YMCAs. Would that be a bad choice? I (traveling alone) will be shopping and hitting a few jazz clubs.

There was an article in the NYTimes a year or so ago listing the "top 10" hotels in NY for under $200. Some of them might be worth checking out.

Please note that hotels in NYC get MUCH more expensive this time of year. The rooms in the Doubletree on Lexington (which is cited in the referenced article) which normally go for under $200 night can go as high as $400-500 this time of the year.

recently found a great inexpensive hotel in Midtown....

Hotel QT...very euro minimilistic which is not personal style but can appreciate for what it is...address is 125 W.45th...

in October i paid like $119 so I am pretty sure you can get for under $200 which is a deal in NY this time of year.

I have also heard that Marriott Financial Center is running alot of deals in Dec becasue they are way down on business travel.

Good luck

Cheap, safe and clean. Reminds me of the joke: Good, fast or cheap--Pick two.

Try priceline.com. I did so for the first time for a trip in October, stayed in a supposed 4 star for 300 a night (rooms were okay, location was good but the concierge was rubbish - I wrote a letter of complaint afterwards)

are you an alum of a school with a "club" there in town (i.e., Harvard, Penn, etc.)? You could try them.

if you can budget just over $200 per night (checkin 18th, checkout the 20th) you might look into:
The Hudson, two blocks from central park $199 per night
Radisson Lexington Hotel New York, three blocks from Rockefeller Centre $207.40 per night
New York Helmsley, 6 blocks east of times square $204 per night

you can find all these hotels listed on expedia, i would stay in any of the three, but prefer to be close to central park or rock-centre, because that's where my favorite stores are.

I made a very similar trip not long ago, and stayed in a small hotel 20 yards right down the street from the Plaza. used my money for shopping, restaurants, etc. instead of lodging, and traveled by myself/ no girl to impress or pay for her dinner!

I stayed at the Radisson when I was in NYC for a few days. I couldn't complain much at all, the accommodations were nice.
