Cheap flights from NYC to London?

Does anyone have any suggestions for ways to find cheap flights from New York to London in July? I've checked the usual suspects like hotwire, expedia, priceline, etc and they've all come back with ~$1,100 flights on either Lufthansa, Continental, United or Virgin.

I'm not much of an expert when it comes to booking travel and am wondering if there's a cheaper way or a discount airline that flies that route.

when flying to the States last year with a friend I massively overspent compared to her, by about £300, she used www.directflights.com and I now use it religiously ever since. Its never failed me.
