Cheaney is in that sucky middle ground: Crockett & Jones price minus $100, nothing interesting in lasts, some awkward upper designs, can't try them on in the US, middling quality (slightly worse than Alden IMO). In almost every case I'd rather spend another 20% and buy CJ... Over the past five years I have bought 6 pairs of Cheaneys and 5 pairs of Aldens. I have kept 4 of the Cheaneys and junked all of the Aldens. I will never waste money on a pair of Aldens again, even if they were $20 brand new. I think they are clumsily finished and clumsily shaped and they aren't getting better. I will spend money on Cheaneys again, since I know from experience they are very solid shoes and are properly finished, although I agree that Crockett & Jones offer a generally better shoe. Regarding last shapes: I assume you prefer lasts based on fit not appearance? If not, then for the sake of foot health reconsider. Regarding designs: that's just taste and six of one half dozen of another. How often are you cheap? They might be good value? Don't you know?
