I have a semi-formal dinner/cocktail party coming up and planned to wear a charcoal pinstriped suit. The stripes are a very faint white. Looking for shirt and tie combinations appropriate for the setting. I was thinking of a purple striped tie with a white french cuff shirt. Any thoughts? Recommendations?

What is the dinner/cocktail party for? Does the suit fit you well?

The dinner is to celebrate a milestone towards graduation. The crowd will be primarily college seniors along with professors.

I was going to say that your suit might not be dark enough for a dinner party, but in an academic setting it won't matter.

I think blue shirts go very well with charcoal suits.

anything would go with that suit but a very dark tie of any color with a white shirt looks the most conservative. Please do not wear school colors.

In academic settings, you can wear nearly anything, even black suits.

Pin-stripes would normally be too business-like for a cocktail party. It may be okay if they're very faint.

Agreed, but, as others have said, if this is an academic thing, you'l be fine. Esecially if you're a student.

White shirt with FC, dark, solid or microdot tie.

+1 You definitely do not want to do a striped tie for an evening event...that coupled with pinstripes will just make you look more like a banker. A solid tie will downplay the pinstripes.

sigh, want to post a fit pic both so we can tell you if the color and stripes are ok and so we can tell you if it fits/not?

+1. I've been getting dirty looks from my fellow grad students recently because I decided I was tired of looking like a bum all of the time.

Agreed. I was going to go all "pinstripes-have-no-place-at-a-cocktail-party" until I saw it was at a university setting. If the OP wears any type of reasonably fitting suit, he will be the best-dressed person there.
