Do most here wear ties with their sportjackets? I never do - keep the shirt open-necked and throw in a silk PS.

    50/50 for me.

this is one of my "rules", I never do that, I would only wear a BD collar without a tie and sportcoat.

^ Funny because I would never wear a BD collar with a tie.

I feel like i forgot to get dressed in the morning if I'm not wearing a tie for business. Besides the fact that it's much more comfortable walking to work with a tie on in cooler weather, the tie keeps the wind from blowing into your shirt.

I rarely wear a spread collar with a sportcoat, rather I prefer a buttondown or club collar that's pinned. Not that a spread doesnt work with a sportcoat, just that most of my informal shirts have a BD collar.

I'm not overly keen on the tie, but the whole works well. Nice shoes too.

    This calls for Iammatt's opinion.

My main concern with this fit is not the colors, but the fact that the suit has a good bit of sheen to it. I am wondering if this takes it out of the realm of CBD.

Lavender OCBD probably not quite CBD. White linen square not pictured.

As someone who used to do this a lot, here are a couple of thoughts. My first impression was that the shirt and tie are too "matchy", although it's really not that egregious. I think it's a natural inclination to think purple tie when you are looking at that shirt. In fact, if you walk around any run of the mill department store, they will have shirt and tie combos laid out like that all over the place. If you want to play off of the color of the shirt with the tie, I've found it to be more elegant to choose a tie where the base color is softly contrasting the shirt, but with details in the tie that might tie it to the shirt.

Here's an example with a shirt that has pink/red pencil stripe that reads pink from 10 feet. This shirt I almost always wore with a solid wine colored tie. Not bad, I think, but almost in-your-face obvious, the "power" look.

Here's another tie choice with the same shirt.* It has a lot less of a "power tie/combo" feel to me, and I find it more elegant primarily for that reason. I also think the textural contrast also serves to break up any hint of matchiness from the maroon tie strip to the shirt pinstripes.

Anyways, just a few amateur thoughts from my own experience.

*(and I do realize that suit selection was dangerous in this instance with stripes being almost the same width as the shirt, I break that rule every now and again, I wouldn't have dared post it in this thread. LOL):

    Mike,
    I really like this look.

    SkinnyGoomba,
that works very well for me. Not a receding into the background look, but a bold/sharp go out there and knock'em dead outfit.

^ Funny because I would never wear a BD collar with a tie.

I'm actually doing that less and less but for certain outfits I think the BD/tie works better than no tie.
