Cashmere Sweater Hierarchy

Sorry to derail the topic again, but does anyone have any thoughts about camel hair vs. cashmere? Specifically, I'm looking for a beefy cardigan, and the camel hair options seem cheaper (but quality is unknown). Also, everyone sells cashmere whereas camel hair seems to be fairly difficult to find.

Had a camel hair sweater in the past and it was awesome. Would definitely buy another. Feels somewhat special and exotic like cashmere but also different.

Because camel doesn’t have as much cachet in the market as cashmere, I think quality is likely better across the board.

Cashmere is softer, but camelhair allows you to carry two gallons of water.

cashmere is more marketable.

As is the case for cashmere and wool, the overall quality is going to depend on the quality of the raw material.

cashmere has a better warm/weight ratio (probably the best one) but in rest camel hair is a very good fabric also. I like it more than alpaca for example. For overcoats if you dont find a thick cashmere one, i would always suggest to chose camel hair. Also, camel hair is one of the better draping cloths
But again, a good cashmere is an overall a better product, that tends to be spun into lighter cloths also which are used for all sorts of purposes; jacketing, knitwear, accessories etc

Camel feels more wiry than cashmere. I don’t personally consider warmth/weight ratios since there are so many other variables especially when one discusses cashmere. Camel’s its own thing; it’s great for a thick garment like a shawl collared cardigan or a cable knit sweater and is soft and springy, but has a wiriness that cashmere doesn’t. I believe it’s much cheaper than cashmere so there’s less trickery with it than with cashmere (re things like yarn tension, use of inferior quality fibres, etc), but that’s just my subjective experience.

re pilling on cashmere sweaters it’s never a good sign.It can happen on even greater quality sweaters especially after a lot of wear and stretching but shouldn’t happen that quickly as on those Johnstons. This just bolsters my anti Johnstons prejudice.

brunello cucinelli from time to time has camel hair, or if you want something that they had in the past, you can send them the ID nr of their garment and they can make it for you in couple of weeks
